Our Fall Meeting Guest Speaker: Tom Diamond

Our guest speaker at the upcoming NATS Ontario Chapter meeting and banquet (November 18th) will be director Tom Diamond.

Following an early career as an actor and theatre director, Mr. Diamond began his operatic work as a member of the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio. Career highlights include developing and directing world premieres of Timothy Sullivan’s Florence The Lady With The Lamp for the Elora Festival (Chalmers Award) and Chan Ka Nin’s Iron Road (Dora Mavor Moore Award) for Tapestry New Opera Works where he is in his third season as Resident Director/Dramaturge.

He has staged 5 productions for Pacific Opera Victoria and 9 operas for the Canadian Opera Company including the Dora winning Julius Caesar and most recently a successful resurrection of the obscure Don Giovanni by Guiseppe Gazzaniga (the inspiration for Mozart’s masterpiece). His production of Squonk was an off-Broadway hit and transferred to Broadway where it won the American Theatre Wing’s Hewes Award. Mr. Diamond’s first short film, The Perfect Match, premiered to unanimous critical acclaim as part of Tapestry’s Opera To Go at Harbourfront’s World Stage Festival. It has been seen at film festivals across North American and was nominated for Best Experimental Film at the Miami Short Film Festival.

Mr. Diamond is one of the most renown and sought after teachers on the continent. He is the Acting Coach for the COC Ensemble Studio. He has directed and coached at many universities, Conservatories and Young Artist Programmes including; Merola, the Eastman School of Music, the New England Conservatory, Indiana University, the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Glen Gould Studio, and annually in summer programmes for Queen of Puddings and in Saint Andrews By The Sea, New Brunswick with Wendy Nielsen.

Mr Diamond is perhaps most often recognized for his participation in both seasons of the Gemini Award-winning television series BATHROOM DIVAS.

Win Free NATS Membership Dues!

To encourage NATS members to take advantage of the Find A Teacher membership benefit, NATS is offering you an incentive: FREE membership for one year to the winner of our Find a Teacher PROFILE contest.

To win, your NATS Teacher Profile must be complete and visible. Add your photo and contact information of course, but go one step further and make your profile memorable by writing an outstanding description of your teaching philosophy, your experience and education. Tell potential students about the success your former or current students enjoy. Then, let us know that you would like to participate in the contest by sending an email to info@nats.org by midnight on September 15, 2011.

Submitted Teacher Profiles will be judged by Donald Simonson, NATS President, and Richard Sjoerdsma, Journal of Singing Editor in Chief, based on the overall aesthetic, use of features available, writing and grammar, effective pitch of services, and the quality of the hyperlinked studio website (if any).

The winning Find A Teacher profile will be selected by October 1, 2011 and announced on the NATS website, NATS News, InterNos, Journal of Singing, and on the NATS social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn).
Don’t miss this chance to make your name known to new students. “NATS is involved in several emerging partnerships that will continue to drive even more traffic to our website, particularly the Find A Teacher page,” says Allen Henderson, Executive Director. “With over 7,000 members teaching over 150,000 students each year, those who share their profiles will continue to be the first ones who are sought out by those seeking voice instruction.” The Find A Teacher web pages rank second in hits to the NATS home page, with 25% more traffic than last year. With the popularity of singing competitions growing world-wide, there are more budding vocalists than ever looking for singing teachers.

Don’t know how to make your NATS Teacher Profile visible online? The NATS Executive Office staff hears you, and we have developed a downloadable FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) document to explain how you can participate in NATS Find A Teacher and get the most out of your NATS membership. Download the NATS Website User Guide and update your Teacher Profile to get found by new voice students today!

Elaine Overholt Workshop: May 7, 2011

Dear NATS Ontario Chapter Members,

As previously announced, we are excited to have Elaine Overholt as our guest presenter for the afternoon session of our NATS Ontario Chapter meeting at the Edward Johnson Building, University of Toronto (Room 330) on Saturday, May 7th at 1 pm. We are expecting to have a good turn out at this event. Please send me a quick R.S.V.P. email if you are planning to attend. Include the number of students/others you will be bringing with you so we have enough seats for everyone.

NOTE: There will be a small fee of $15 dollars for each non-NATS member attending the session.

Ms. Overholt will be focusing on her “Big Voice” approach for teaching Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM) styles to singers. During the presentation she will demonstrate how she coaches classically trained singers to sing in a Music Theatre contemporary style. Elaine will work with 2 or 3 singers during the seminar and at this time we are accepting applications from you, the membership teachers, regarding singers you would like to have participate in this session. The acceptance deadline for applications will be April 17th, 2011. Applicants should send contact and some background information including voice type to alisonmoodie@hotmail.com.
Obviously, Ms. Overholt will not be able to work with everyone who might apply so please be understanding if your student is not one of the singers chosen.

Please RSVP as soon as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Alison Watson-Moodie
V.P. of Special Projects, Nats Ont. Chapter.

Elaine Overholt has established herself as one of North America’s most respected and treasured singers, voice teachers and vocal producers. Her musical talents and diverse background began as a young girl studying piano with the famed Marie Thomson and performing gospel music in her church choir. By the age of eleven she was the church organist and by fourteen was the choir director. Her formal musical training continued at The University of Western Ontario where she entered as a Piano Performance Major studying under Gwen Beamish – MacMillan. Elaine had the unique experience of working under all the voice teachers as an accompanist and studied for four years under the legendary choral conductor Deral Johnson. In her last year she fought to become a Vocal Performance Major, studying with tenor Alvin Reimer and graduating with high honours.

Stepping away from the world of opera Elaine ventured into the pop, rock and theatre genres. Her performing career has allowed her the envied opportunity to work with the titans of pop music; Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick, Anne Murray, and Triumph amongst them. Ms. Overholt has performed as a soloist on world stages, major network television, albums, films, thousands of jingles and recorded two albums and a No. 3 single on Billboard.

Elaine’s gift for teaching is well known in Hollywood and Broadway as she coached Hollywood stars such as John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer for ‘Hairspray’ the movie along with Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, and Queen Latifah for the Oscar-winning ‘Chicago’. Elaine also coached Ellen Degeneres in a live segment on her hit talk show ‘The Ellen Degeneres Show’ and was invited back for an encore guest appearance.

As a Broadway coach Elaine trained the singers in the lead roles of Broadway hits ‘Hairspray‘, ‘The Producers’ and ‘Mamma Mia’. Also, record labels such as Universal, Capitol/EMI, Sony/BMG and Virgin send their artists to Ms. Overholt where they learn to protect their voices and develop stamina and style.

Elaine is the host of a compelling new TV series entitled BIG VOICE that is airing on The Oprah Winfrey Network in Canada (OWN). The show inspirationally connects Elaine to a group of diverse women ready to discover the true potential of their vocal abilities. Each episode culminates in a spectacular finale where they live their dream on stage.

Ontario Chapter General Meeting & Workshops: May 7, 2011

Dear Colleagues and fellow NATS members,

I am happy to announce that our spring general meeting will be held on Saturday, May 7th at the Edward Johnson Building (room 330), University of Toronto at 9:30a.m. After adjournment a wonderful day of professional development has been planned by our vice-presidents for workshops, Todd Wieczorek and Alison Moodie.

For the morning, we will have a Vocal Seminar/Discussion–What we hear: describing vocal sound. This professional development session will invite teachers to listen to various recorded voices, evaluate what is heard, discuss what goes into making the sound, and how to work with it. Samples will demonstrate beginning to professionally-trained voices in a session led by our very own Ontario District Governor, Torin Chiles.

We are fortunate to have Elaine Overholt as our afternoon presenter from 1:00 to 2:30p.m.. Ms. Overholt is Canadian and is well-known as a voice teacher, vocal coach and producer throughout North America, specializing in contemporary vocal techniques. Originally trained in classical piano and classical voice at the University of Western Ontario, she has since built her career and specialized in performing and coaching contemporary styles including gospel, music theatre and rock. As a performer Ms. Overholt has worked with such well known performers as Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Richard Margison, Anne Murray and Dionne Warwick.
Elaine was the voice coach for the cast of the Hollywood movies and the Broadway shows of “Hairspray” (John Travolta et al) and “Chicago” (Renee Zellweger,Queen Latifah, Richard Gere). She has been a guest voice coach for Ellen on the Ellen Degeneres Show. Many of us also remember Elaine, working with Andrew Lloyd Weber, as the voice coach for the Canadian TV show “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria” participants. Virgin, Universal, Capitol and Sony record labels send recording artists to Elaine Overholt for coaching to help them protect their voices, develop stamina and individual style.

Elaine will be giving a 1 1/2 hour presentation/masterclass to our NATS members on how she teaches contemporary singing styles, mainly music theatre, to classically trained singers.

I hope that most of you will be able to attend this wonderful day of learning and fellowship with our chapter members. On this occasion, we’d also like to invite guests to attend the Overholt workshop for a small fee. So please invite and encourage other teachers or students or any interested parties to come along to the afternoon workshop.

I’m really looking forward to seeing you all in May and to these great professional development opportunities. Mark the date, Saturday, May 7th, on your calendars now!

With all best wishes,
Catherine Robbin
President of NATS Ontario Chapter
