NATS Virtual Professional Development Event – “On The Cutting Edge”

Schedule

THREE Exciting Presentations!

11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. – Lorna MacDonald – VOCAL TRADITIONS IN THE CLASSROOM AND THE STUDIO

In this presentation, Lorna advocates for including traditional music in the voice pedagogy curriculum and the voice studio. Traditional music is used to prioritize and explore students’ inherited personal traits, language and artistry, revealing their earliest self-identification and awareness as music-makers. Examples include graduate research projects, classroom presentations, a voice lesson, and research-creation. Traditions – conventional but never ordinary!

12:45-1:15 p.m. – Lunch Break

1:15 – 2:30 p.m – Jeremy Ryan Mossman – SCIENCE IN THE SENSES: AN EXPERIENTIAL NON-LINEAR APPROACH TO VOICE TEACHING

Participants will be guided through an experiential voice lesson designed to heighten sensory awareness of key regions often overlooked in traditional voice training. You will leave with new teaching tools, practical insights, fresh language, and a renewed appreciation for the intelligence of the body as a fully orchestrated living whole capable of subconscious self-organization through an improvement of awareness and linking perception and action.

2:30-2:45 p.m. – Break

2:45 – 4 p.m. – Liz Jackson Hearns – EXPLORING GENDER THROUGH SINGING: TECHNIQUE, PERCEPTION AND IDENTITY

Through discussion and guided vocal exploration, this workshop examines how gender is heard in singing and how technique can shape gender perception. Participants will experiment with gender-expansive and affirming approaches to support agency and authenticity for singing students.
